Consumption of caffeine leads to addiction to sleeping tablets

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirms that caffeine should belong to prohibited products of the World Anti-Doping Agency. The president of the AOC John Coates affirms that caffeine induces addiction to sleeping remedies and tranquilizers.
It is known that the Australian swimmers that participated at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics applied sleeping tablets Stilnox. So, John Coates confirms that usage of caffeine resulted in intake of Stilnox.
Stilnox is usually sold under the trade name Zolpidem. It is a sleeping remedy that is recommended to cure insomnia.
The president of AOC claims that sportspeople use caffeine in order to increase performance. Usage of this substance leads to insomnia. So, sportspersons should apply sleeping remedies in order to cure insomnia.
The AOC and Swimming Australia want to ban usage of caffeine. It is their response to the disgrace connected with Grant Hackett. A physician recommended administering Stilnox to this athlete at the time of the 2003 World Championships. As a result, Grant Hackett became addicted to this sleeping remedy.
Grant Hackett is a celebrated swimmer. He won many competitions, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Alan Thompson, the former coach of the Australian Olympic Team, has also confirmed that usage of Stilnox is widely spread among Australian swimmers.
Stilnox was never on the list of prohibited products. Anti-doping agencies didn’t conduct tests to discover intake of this preparation.
But when it comes to caffeine, earlier it was banned by the WADA. But since it became widely spread and consumed in society, it was excluded from the list of banned medicines.
John Fahey, the president of the WADA, notes that the WADA made the right decision and excluded caffeine from list of prohibited medicines. He claimed that caffeine would not be included in the list of forbidden drugs again.
However numerous experts state that caffeine is a performance enhancer, John Fahey contests this statement. He confirms that caffeine doesn’t impact on performance. He concludes that no any scientific literature proves ability of caffeine to increase performance.

Case related to Dwain Chambers became open door for other former steroid users to participate in Olympics

The sprinter Dwain Chambers, who successfully served his 2-year ban for administration of anabolic steroids, was chosen to be the representative of Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics.
Chambers troubles about the way to represent the home country. When it comes to the British Olympic Association (BOA), they don’t want to see him taking part in the Olympic Games. Some former British Olympians don’t support the consumer of steroids as well.
The British sprinter administered the steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) introduced by Patrick Arnold. After Don Catlin introduced a method that could discover intake of THG, Dwain Chambers tested positive for this steroid. It was on November 7, 2003.
Of course, administration of the steroid destroyed his reputation. When he attempted to come back to professional sports, the BOA made the decision to change the laws in order to prevent appearing of the sprinter in the 2012 Summer Olympics. The BOA has introduced the rules which suspend steroid users from Olympics for life-time.
Introducing this rule, the BOA violated the doping code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This situation resulted in many disputes and news.
The case was even presented in the Court of Arbitration for Sports. The chairman of the BOA Loyd Moynihan put significant efforts in order to prevent appearing of Dwain Chambers or other steroid users at Olympics. Such former Olympians, as Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson, loudly supported efforts of the BOA.
Daley Thompson claimed that Britain should not compromise. He noted that Britain should not listen to the rest of the world that don’t desire to have high standards in sports. The Court of Arbitration for Sports acted on behalf of the WADA. Chambers was allowed to be the representative of Britain at the 2012 London Olympics. This case turned out to be an open door for other sportspersons that have served their bans to participate in Olympics.
The cyclist David Millar and the shot-putter Carl Myerscough that have served their suspensions for usage of steroids will compete at the 2012 Olympics too.
Despites spending much time to prevent appearing of steroid users at Olympic Games, the BOA finally confirmed that not only Chambers but also Millar, Myerscough or any other athlete that has served a suspension successfully may compete at Olympics. The CEO of the BOA Andy Hunt has confirmed that any athlete is treated the same way.

Shocking message for US: Austrian authorities sent steroid dealer to Slovenia

Lately a huge steroid empire was busted in Austria. It was discovered that this company got 40 million Euros due to illegal sale of steroids. Mihael Karner was claimed to be the leader of the drug ring. The USA asked Austria to extradite this steroid dealer to the US. But he wasn’t extradited. Mihael Karner paid one million Euros to Austrian authorities that sent him to his native country Slovenia.
Slovenia’s laws are not the same as Austrian’s ones. According to the Constitution of this country, it is forbidden to extradite Slovenians to another country. Mihael Karner is a lucky man. If he had been extradited to the USA, he would have probably gone to 40 years in jail.
Federal prosecutors began the investigation linked with this drug ring in 2005. The steroid ring began to function earlier. Federal prosecutors learnt that since 2000 till 2008 the company got 40 million Euros due to illicit sale of steroids.
Federal prosecutors learnt in 2005 that Mihael Karner and his wife were implicated in illegal distribution of steroids but they couldn’t prosecute them because the Karners were in Austria. But later steroid laws in Austria were changed due to suppression by the US. Moreover, the US induced the arrest of Mihael Karner and his wife.
However the US puts efforts to enforce European countries and other countries of the world to extradite steroid dealers to the USA, it doesn’t have significant success in this area. But the persons who were involved in “Musclebear” and “British Dragon” were extradited from Cyprus and Thailand to the USA. That time the US had a victory.
As for Mihael Karner, the USA supposed that the extradition would be successful. That’s why the US was shocked, when it was found that Karner reached Slovenia safely. So, the USA was defeated this time in the war on steroids.

Valuable research related to steroids conducted by Swedish scientists

A precious study was conducted at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University. Scientists studied and set connections between administration of steroids, fat distribution in body and some unwanted consequences of anabolic steroids. The research has displayed that consumers of steroids can experience abnormal fat distribution which can cause heart attacks and other problems linked with cardiovascular system.
The results of the research and conclusions are published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
10 elite lifters from Sweden were involved in the research. They use anabolic steroids regularly. Thus, it was studied role of steroids in body fat distribution.
It is affirmed that lifters that administer steroids possessing anabolic and androgenic properties have risks suffering from heart attacks. The experts at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University have studied how body fat is distributed in lifters who use steroids possessing anabolic and androgenic properties. It has been defined that incorrect fat distribution may be a reason for dysfunctions of cardiovascular system.
The lifters that were enrolled in the study were divided into two groups. Fat distribution was studied in lifters of the two groups. The lifters of one group used anabolic steroids. The lifters of the other group didn’t take steroids.
The research has shown that those who use steroids have lower fat deposits below the waist. So, they have more reduced levels of gynoid fat.
DEXA scanner that is usually utilized to study osteoporosis has been used in order to determine fat distribution during the study.

Canadian wrestler that was going to represent Canada at 2012 Olympics tested positive for steroids

The Canadian wrestler Colin Daynes tested positive for forbidden medications. His Olympic dreams will not become real. He was banned for 2 years.
Last year the sportsperson was chosen for the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.
The wrestler was banned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports. He failed a drug test, when he acquired a gold medal in the 74-kg division.
The sportsman tested positive for Drostanolone, Boldenone, Tamoxifen and Furosemide. Each of these products is in the list of banned preparations of the World Anti-Doping Agency. As for Drostanolone and Boldenone, they are anabolic steroids. Furosemide represents a diuretic medication. It serves as a masking agent for other products. Tamoxifen is a product which is recommended for prevention of undesirable results which occur due to application of steroids.
The wrestler admitted to administration of forbidden products and accepted the sentence. Colin Daynes claimed that he administered the prohibited medications to receive recovery from an injury. He told to The Star Monday night that he wanted to recover in order to participate in the 2012 Olympics. The athlete noticed that a naturopathic physician recommended taking these products. The athlete also added that he hadn’t known that the products were banned. According to his affirmations, if he had known, he wouldn’t have competed.
The wrestler wanted to represent Canada at the Olympics again. He represented his country at the 1996 Olympics that took place in Atlanta.
He didn’t attempt to defense himself. The wrestler noted that there was no any difference whether the forbidden products were found in the blood or not. They presented in the system.
Earlier this wrestler also competed in mixed martial arts. Colin Daynes had to qualify internationally. The wrestler thought that he would compete at the Olympic Games in London last time. Then his career ends. But he was sentenced to ban due to positives for forbidden medications.
His personal trainer Bill Hogarth notes that that the things are too bad. But the athlete didn’t desire to lie. Hogarth hopes that Daynes’ reputation will not be destroyed. During the career Colin Daynes won 62 gold medals, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Australian steroid user bought 1 kg of testosterone powder for personal application

Carlton Alloysius Hayes, a person from Australia, was caught possessing almost one kg of Testosterone Propionate. He ordered powder of this preparation via internet and obtained it from overseas. This man also desired to purchase benzyl benzoate, a chemical which is used for preparing of solution for injections from powder. When police officers found out that he ordered this chemical, he was asked about purpose of purchasing it. Carlton Alloysius Hayes said that he intended to get it for a friend. But he noted that he had forgotten the name of the friend.
Then Hayes himself contacted policemen and asked them to come to his place. When police officers came, Carlton Alloysius Hayes showed that he possessed two bags of white powder. He also admitted that he had ordered benzyl benzoate in order to mix it with the powder and ready solution for injections.
Carlton Alloysius Hayes weighed circa 156 kg, when he was in the court. He claimed that he couldn’t lose weight, however he trained at the gym. So, he applied steroids to lose weight and look better. This man noticed that he hadn’t had any desire to distribute steroids. He bought the testosterone powder for self-administration.
A defense attorney for Hayes noted that his client had a good reputation. He was ever a hard worker.
However he had to be sentenced to imprisonment because he purchased steroids from overseas, the judge’s decision was to give him certain months of suspended jail. So, he escaped from imprisonment.

Center of international steroid ring located in Poland

A criminal group that was dealing with manufacture and sale of anabolic steroids was busted in Poland. Over 90 police officers and frontier police were involved in the investigation connected with this illegal steroid ring. Customers were mainly from North America. Police detained 19 persons: 6 women and 13 men. They were charged with illicit manufacture and sale of steroids and money laundering.
Investigators determined that the drug ring was dealing with steroids since March 2008. The company advertised steroids for increase of muscle mass and health in general. The medicines were offered for sale per internet. Persons from the USA, Canada, France, Belgium, etc. placed orders and acquired illegal products.  Steroids were packed in fake packages and sent to customers. There was a person that was responsible for receiving money and transferring it to members of the drug ring.
Homes and business offices of the drug ring were raided. Police officers found huge quantities of steroids and packages that were prepared to be shipped abroad. Some vehicles, including BMW X6, Mercedes S500 and Jeep Grand, watches, jewelry and other things were confiscated. The total value of seized objects and money was estimated. It was circa 1 million Polish zlotys.
It was defined by police officers that 3 individuals were leaders of the drug ring. They face 15-year imprisonment.
This investigation conducted by Polish police turned out to be successful. It was not the first successful steroid investigation in this country. Last year Polish police officers busted another illegal drug ring. 7 persons were detained. Approximately 80 policemen were implicated in that investigation. Police also reported about substances which were sold by that drug ring.

Muscle power caused by exogenous testosterone is not affected by usage of dutasteride

According to a trial, the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor dutasteride (Avodart) doesn’t influence negatively on muscle mass in healthy men who take testosterone.
A research related to this issue was conducted. While fat-free mass was enhanced by 0,6-7,1 kg during 20 weeks in men who administered dutasteride and Testosterone Enanthate, fat-free mass was increased by 0,8-8,1 kg in those that applied placebo and testosterone. As for muscle power, sexual functions and volume of prostate, they didn’t differ in men of these 2 groups.
5-alpha reductase inhibitors are used clinically to cure benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia. These are dysfunctions that usually affect middle-aged and elderly males.
DHT represents the chief metabolite of testosterone. But the function of DHT in human development is not studied well. It is supposed that DHT plays vital role in development of prostate and phallus.
Middle-aged and old males with low testosterone levels who administer testosterone medications have risks related to low muscle mass and sexual troubles.
Specialists also put efforts to develop nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs). It is confirmed that SARMs and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are safe because DHT is probably not necessary for effects on muscle mass, strength and sexual life. It is also doubted whether DHT has any role for androgen’s effects on hematocrit, hemoglobin, lipids and certain other factors.
Shalender Bhasin and his colleagues at the Boston University have conducted a clinical trial in order to see whether 5?-reduction to DHT is needed in order to mediate androgen’s effects on fat-free mass. Moreover, the experts evaluated role of 5?-reduction on sexual functions, hematocrit and levels of lipid.
The research conducted by Bhasin and his colleagues implicated healthy men who were 18- 50 years old and had normal levels of testosterone. They used Testosterone Enanthate and dutasteride or placebo. Dosages of Testosterone Enanthate ranged from 50 to 600 mg weekly.
Since 5 ?-reductase inhibitors increase testosterone levels, all men were given also gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist in order to block natural testosterone.
The results of the research manifested that fat-free mass was increased due to administration of testosterone. It didn’t differ essentially in men of these two groups. Muscle power which was also increased due to testosterone use didn’t differ between the two groups as well. Sexual activity, volume of prostate, sebum production, hemoglobin, acne, hematocrit didn’t differ substantially between those who took placebo and dutasteride.
The specialists note that effectiveness of 5?-reductase inhibitors may be limited in men who have normal or enhanced testosterone levels. That’s why it is important to check levels of testosterone in order to determine how bodies will respond to 5 ?-reductase inhibitors.
So, the study has manifested that muscle mass is not affected by 5?-reductase inhibitors.  Males have to know that if they have high levels of testosterone or introduce exogenous testosterone in their bodies, 5?-reductase inhibitors will not cause shrinkage of prostate.

Spain’s national police busted drug ring that provided performance-enhancing drugs to certain athletes that competed at 2008 Olympics

Spain’s police busted a large doping ring.
According to statements of police, sportspersons that tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Vuelta a Espana purchased steroids and other related medications from this illegal drug ring.
10 individuals who were implicated in this illegal drug ring were detained. Professional cyclists and other sportspersons had links with this illegal drug network.  It was a popular doping ring in the world of elite sport.
The investigation was codenamed “Operation Skype”. The doctor  Alberto Beltran Nino was the leader of the drug chain. He is a former doctor of Liberty Seguros team. This man was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment, when he tried to fly from Madrid to Columbia. Cezar Perez, the former personal trainer of the Spanish runner Marta Dominguez, was also arrested by police officers.
However the center of the illegal drug ring was established in Barcelona, it was a multinational company. The ring had contacts in Morocco and Columbia. Steroids, HGH and EPO CERA were distributed by this illegal drug ring.
Dr. Beltran also worked with Xacobeo-Galicia team. David Garcia, the professional rider of this team, tested positive for EPO at the 2010 Vuelta.
The investigation started summer last year. It was originally linked with the runner Jose Luis Blanco after he was banned for two years due to positives for forbidden medicines.
