David Howman expresses his opinion about point of view about anti-doping programs in several sports organizations. While the director general of the WADA seems to be happy with jobs of certain sports organizations, he says that anti-doping programs in other leagues/teams are not appropriate.
For example, David Howman praises the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for its anti-doping program. The director general of the WADA affirms that anti-doping program is suitable in tennis.
But as for the National Basketball Association (NBA), it doesn’t agree to adopt its anti-doping policy to that of the WADA. It doesn’t agree to add certain new drug tests in order to catch those that use steroids and/or other banned substances. That’s why David Howman states that the anti-doping system of the NBA is not good enough to detect those that dope. He states that the NBA should add more complicated new methods as well.
The director general of the WADA affirms that drug tests conducted in tennis are of high quality. But there is a defect in tennis’ anti-doping policy. Many tests are conducted during competitions. But few tests are conducted out-of-competition. That’s why ITF’s anti-doping policy is also criticized.
Of course, nobody can say that anti-doping system of ITF is perfect. It has some lacks too. But it is quite adequate.
Thus, you should not believe that tennis is clean from doping totally. Some tennis players are likely to use steroids and/or related products. But it is not as tainted, as certain other sports.
Just one tennis player was suspended for usage of banned products. Although it seems to prove that tennis is clean, it is important to consider that there are certain methods to avoid detection. As you probably know, the cyclist Lance Armstrong applied steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs and avoided detection much time. Couldn’t tennis players act the same way?
